Pyrometallurgy is a wide family of high temperature processes to recover metals from ores, concentrates and recycled by-products. Raw materials are converted to oxides or directly decomposed at high temperatures. Typical examples of pyrometallurgical processes are: 

  • Copper smelting from sulphidic ore concentrates.
  • High temperature nickel recovery from sulphidic ore concentrates.
  • Zinc extraction from steelmaking by-products in the Waelz process.
  • Smelting of chromite ore at ferrochrome production by the Perrin process.
  • High temperature sulphate roasting of lithium ores (hard rock).


Metals are recovered and impurities are removed in the molten phase. Fluxes (slagging agents) are required to enable impurities by slagging. Many types of reagents are used to capture either the recovered metal or impurities in high temperature decomposition processes. All chemicals used in pyrometallurgical processes must be used at high purity and consistent quality, in order to ensure consistent and efficient metal recovery.
